How to Choose the Right OTR Tire for Your Operation

There are various factors to consider when selecting tires for a haul truck and evaluating your site’s tread is the first thing you should do. Before selecting a particular tire, you should have a thorough understanding of the activity your vehicle is on site.

At a mining site, this can be done by attaching a locator unit to a truck and operating the vehicle for a set period. This will help you develop a “location map”. At the same time, you have to keep track of the distance traveled by the truck, its speed, and the cargo it carries.

Then, calculate the average payload and multiply it by the average vehicle speed. This calculation will tell you your tons-miles-per-hour (TMPH) or tons-kilometers-per-hour (TKPH) rating.
